Volubilis
Volubilis is an ancient city located in present-day Morocco. The site was first colonized by the Phoenicians in the 8th century BC and then became a Roman colony in 40 AD. It flourished as a regional center of trade and agriculture until the 3rd century AD, when it was abandoned. At its peak, Volubilis was a major city of the Roman Empire. It was the administrative capital of the province of Mauretania Tingitana and home to a thriving community of merchants, farmers, and artisans. The city's prosperity is reflected in its well-preserved ruins, which include an impressive array of public buildings, temples, and private homes. Despite its remote location, Volubilis has been extensively excavated since the early 20th century. Today, it is one of Morocco's most popular tourist destinations.
