Day 1 of the itinerary
  • Departure from the airport of origin towards Casablanca "where depending on the time of year there may be a time difference".
  • Connection with the Casablanca–Errachidia at 23.00 h* .
  • Arrival in Errachidia at 23.59 h .
  • Passport procedures and baggage collection .
  • Transfer to Erfoud , a city known as "the Gateway to the Desert ", approximately 70 km (50' journey).
  • Accommodation and dinner at the Kasbah Xaluca , listed as unique in Morocco for its peculiar characteristics.
  • Check available flights and departure cities.
  • Errachidia did not always have a civilian airport
Errachidia Airport (code ERH) was originally a French military base in the 1930s and only began receiving regular commercial flights in 2007. The 11:00 PM flight from Casablanca is one of the last of the day and practically the only one that allows you to reach the Sahara Desert directly without spending the night in another city!

  • Erfoud is the world capital of fossils
Just 70 km from where you'll be staying, this small town is home to millions of fossils dating back 380 million years (when this area was covered by a prehistoric sea). Many of the black marble lamps, tables, and sinks you'll see in Moroccan luxury hotels (even in the Kasbah Xaluca itself!) are made from this marble, which is rich in fossilized orthoceratites and trilobites.
  • From Erfoud, the Sahara Desert is accessible in just 30 minutes
Erfoud is not only the "Gateway to the Desert," but it also marks the point where the Erg Chebbi dunes begin to rise to heights of up to 150 meters. Imagine, after your overnight journey, watching the sun illuminate these reddish dunes at dawn, dunes that have served as the backdrop for films like "Kingdom of Heaven" and "Gladiator"!
Day 2 of the itinerary
  • Today will be a day of total desert .
  • We will travel along one of the Dakar Rally tracks , visiting villages and desert nomads
  • We will stop at the Marine Fossil Quarries , which are 360 million years , and have a picnic in an authentic oasis .
  • We will continue until we reach the Great Erg Chebbi , " Desert of Dunes of very fine sand ", where we will change the 4x4 vehicle for dromedaries , to enter the heart of the dunes and contemplate an unforgettable sunset .
  • We will arrive by dromedary at the Bivouac de Luxe , where we will stay in tents like those used by desert nomads.
  • Accommodation and dinner.
  • “under the stars” is spectacular .
  • The track you're going to travel on is literally the one used in the Dakar Rally.
Between 2005 and 2008, the most feared stage of the Dakar Rally ran exactly where you'll be driving today. The drivers called it "the Merzouga Trap" because the fine sand of Erg Chebbi caused the trucks to sink up to their axles. You'll be tackling it much more calmly and without the risk of elimination!
  • Erg Chebbi is one of the few places in the world where you can hear "the song of the dunes"
When the sand is very dry and hot (especially in summer and autumn), as the dunes slide down the slopes they emit a deep, resonant sound similar to a distant airplane or an organ. The Berbers call it "the roar of the desert," and it only occurs in six or seven ergs around the world. If you're lucky and there's a bit of wind, you might hear it this afternoon as you walk down a dune after sunset!
  • Erg Chebbi is home to the tallest dune in all of Morocco
The Great Dune of Merzouga (locally called Lalla Merzouga or the Big Dune) reaches a height of 160-170 meters from its base (equivalent to a 50-55 story building). It is the tallest dune in the country and one of the tallest accessible by camel in the entire Sahara. From its summit, on clear days, you can see as far as Algeria, more than 40 km away… and many luxury bivouacs (including the most famous ones) are located right at its base, so you can have it as a backdrop when you leave your tent in the morning!
Day 3 of the itinerary
  • "A Date with Sunrise" . It is recommended to get up early to walk to the top of the dunes and see the sunrise .
  • Bedouin breakfast and departure by car which will take us around the Erg to the abandoned village of Merdani .
  • We will continue to the Sudanese village of Khamlia , where its inhabitants will treat us to their traditional dances and mint tea .
  • Later we'll go to Rissani* to visit its market , unique in these parts, where the desert tribes and nomads donkey "parking lot .
  • Finally, we will climb to a natural viewpoint to say goodbye to the desert with a beautiful panoramic view .
  • Food at Des Dunes , the most authentic Berber pizzeria in Erfoud.
  • Return to the Kasbah Xaluca to take the rest of the day off .
  • After the desert experience, it's nice to be able to relax : heated pool, jacuzzi, tennis, mini golf, hammam , massage or Quads through the dunes (optional excursion).
  • Accommodation and dinner at Kasbah Xaluca.
  • This afternoon the cars with drivers will be at your disposal if you wish to continue visiting the area or go to Erfoud for a free stroll.
  • The Rissani market is held on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. Sometimes these days don't coincide; in that case, they try to schedule it for another day, or sometimes there simply isn't enough time to visit.
  • The legend of dawn in Erg Chebbi
According to local Berber tradition, the Erg Chebbi dunes (where you'll see the sunrise) arose as divine punishment: one day, the inhabitants of the ancient village of Merzouga denied water to a woman and her exhausted children, and a sandstorm buried them forever. Today, at dawn, you can "hear" their voices in the wind as the sun paints the dunes gold... a story the guides tell to bring the desert to life!
  • Khamlia and the healing power of Gnawa music
The inhabitants of Khamlia, descendants of sub-Saharan slaves brought from Sudan and Mali centuries ago, use their dances and hypnotic rhythms (accompanied by the guembri, a three-stringed bass) not only for entertainment but also to "cure" ailments such as scorpion stings or stress. It's an ancestral ritual that induces trance and transmits "baraka" (divine blessing), and while you sip mint tea, you'll be at the heart of a UNESCO tradition that blends African laments with Moroccan spirituality!
  • The "donkey parking lot" of Rissani, the most authentic souk in the Sahara
At the Rissani market (open Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays), nomads tether hundreds of donkeys in a vast open area—the only unfenced animal "parking lot" in the entire city!—where they are haggled over and inspected as if they were luxury cars. It is the last bastion of the Berber Silk Road, supplying tribes since the 14th century with spices, goats, and medfouna (the Berber "pizza" you'll try at Des Dunes).
Day 4 of the itinerary
  • We depart on asphalt towards Tinerhir , a town that offers a beautiful panorama of contrasts with its pink houses and palm groves , an ideal starting point to delve into the famous Todra Gorges , where we can walk a little following the course of the river.
  • Later we will continue to Boumalne Dades , a town located in the Valley of the Birds at an altitude of 1,612 m in the High Atlas Mountains .
  • Lunch at the Xaluca Dades 4* hotel.
  • In the afternoon we will travel through the Dades Valley to its gorges and arrive at the viewpoint , where we will have tea .
  • During the visit we will stop at the “monkey paws” .
  • Accommodation and dinner at the Xaluca Dades 4* hotel.
  • The “monkey paws” are not monkey paws… nor are they paws
The famous rock formation in the Dades Valley gets its name from the fact that, seen from a distance, it resembles a monkey's fingers clinging to the mountain. In reality, it's a series of limestone folds formed 70 million years ago by the collision of the African and European tectonic plates. Geologists call it a "chevron fold," and it's one of the most photogenic and perfect examples in the world—so perfect, in fact, that it appears in university geology textbooks!
  • The Todra Gorges are the highest "climbable canyon" in North Africa
The walls of the Todra Gorge reach a vertical height of 300 meters while being only 10 meters wide at its narrowest point. Since the 1970s, it has been a world-renowned climbing mecca: there are over 400 established routes, some of them 8c+, and some of the most famous climbers (Chris Sharma, Dani Andrada, etc.) have left legendary routes here. As you stroll peacefully along the bottom, you are literally standing beneath the walls where climbing history is being written!
  • Boumalne Dades and the Valley of the Birds
At 1,612 meters, the Dades Valley is one of the last refuges in the High Atlas Mountains where golden eagles, griffon vultures, and Barbary falcons can still be seen soaring. Berber shepherds consider these birds of prey sacred and never disturb them; therefore, from the viewpoint where you'll have afternoon tea, it's quite common to see them gliding right at eye level… a stunning photo guaranteed!
Day 5 of the itinerary
  • Today we will venture along trails deep into the Central High Atlas , discovering spectacular landscapes .
  • We will visit Berber villages such as Boutaghrar and Amskar , where time seems to have stopped.
  • We will see mountains , canyons and valleys , as well as the caves nomads still live in the mountains.
  • We will explore the M'Goun Gorges for an unforgettable walk .
  • Lunch road , at a “Gite d'Etape” .
  • Accommodation and dinner at the Xaluca Dades 4* hotel .
  • The Boutaghrar Valley is the “Moroccan Little Tibet”
At over 2,400 meters above sea level, this hidden valley is considered one of the highest permanently inhabited valleys in all of North Africa. Its mud-brick and stone houses cling to the hillside like those in the Himalayas, and shepherds still use the ancient transhumance route that crosses the Tizi n'Tazazert pass at 2,900 meters. Here, time truly stood still centuries ago!
  • The cave dwellings where nomads live are truly troglodyte dwellings.
In the Amskar region and the M'Goun Valley, families of the Ait Atta tribe still spend the summer inside cool, natural caves (some over 200 meters deep). The herds enter at night to protect them from the heat and predators; it's the exact same system their ancestors used 1,000 years ago. May-June and September-October are the best times to see them inhabited!
  • The M'Goun Gorges are the longest canyon in Morocco
At nearly 30 km long, the M'Goun Gorges are longer than the famous Todra and Dades Gorges combined. In spring and early summer, the river runs so high that the trek is done in the water (up to your waist!), which is why locals call it "the river you walk." The section you'll hike is one of the most spectacular and least crowded in the Atlas Mountains.
Day 6 of the itinerary
  • This morning we will leave early for Ouarzazate to catch our return flight .
  • Departure of the Ouarzazate–Casablanca flight and connection with the flight to our point of origin .
  • Ouarzazate is the “Hollywood of Africa”
Over the past 60 years, more than 200 blockbuster films have been shot here: Gladiator, Game of Thrones (it was Yunkai and Pentos), The Mummy, Babel, Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen… Even the Atlas Studios Hotel (just 5 km from the airport) is the world's largest active film set. The scenery you see from the airplane window as you take off has appeared on more screens than many famous actors!
  • The Kasbah of Aït Ben Haddou from the air
This famous kasbah (a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987) is just 30 km northwest of the airport. On clear days, sitting on the left side of the plane (facing forward), just 3-5 minutes after takeoff, it appears perfectly silhouetted against the High Atlas Mountains.
  • From the air, as you take off towards Casablanca, you will be able to see the largest concentrated solar system in the world.
Just northeast of Ouarzazate lies the Noor solar plant (over 6,000 hectares of mirrors), the largest concentrated solar power plant on the planet. On clear days, it's perfectly visible from the air as a lake of shimmering light. It produces enough energy for more than 2 million Moroccans and is so vast that astronauts use it as a reference point from space.
